Transition from swim to bike at the front of the Wateresdge Inn - WATERHEAD - AMBLESIDE 

 

LOOP 1

WATERHEAD - KIRKSTONE PASS - WATERHEAD

 

From T1 Head North to the summit of Kirkstone Pass (25%) and return to T1 via Troutbeck.

 

The bike leg starts at the head of Lake Windermere from T1, heading North through the market town of Ambleside before bearing North East to the summit of Kirkstone Pass via the infamous ‘Struggle’. This 3.2 mile 25% climb culminlating in a series of switchbacks, is renowned throughout the cycling world as one of the most challenging ascents in the UK. Descending back to T1 via the village of Troutbeck, competitors are required to dismount and pass through Transition to register their race time.

 

LOOP 2

GREAT LANGDALE - WRYNOSE - HARDNOTT - SANTON BRIDGE

 

From T1 WATERHEAD, head West towards SANTON BRIDGE in the ESK VALLEY. 

 

Head West through the valley of Great Langdale below the famous Langdale pikes. Once at the head of the valley the short but steep BLEA TARN,1.2 miles, (20%), takes the competitors to Little Langdale and the start of WRYNOSE EAST, a 3 miles climb at a constant (20%), topping off with a short half mile (25%) sting in the tale.

Through Cockley Beck to HARDKNOTT EAST, probably the steepest tarmac road section in the UK, the relatively short (2 miles) but incredibly steep (33%). Hardknott East is a series of switchbacks, culminating in a short, sharp straight to the summit. Once over the twin passes of Wrynose and Hardnott competitors head West along the mostly flat valley of Eskdale before looping back on themselves via the short, steep climb of Irton Pike plantation.

 

LOOP 3

SANTON BRIDGE - HARDNOTT PASS - WRYNOSE PASS - LITTLE LANGDALE - WATERHEAD

 

From SANTON BRIDGE return to T2 WATERHEAD via HARDKNOTT WEST (33%), WRYNOSE WEST (20%).

 

Now heading East, back along the Eskdale Valley, competitors enjoy a flat section before the steepest and hardest climb on the bike route, Hardknott West. At 30% for 3 miles, topping out at 33%, Hardknott West is a cruel and leg sapping climb, renowned throughout the UK cycling worlds as the toughest climb in the UK.

Once summiting Hardknott competitors have the relatively easy ascent of Wrynose West before ascending via Little Langdale back to T2 at Waterhead.
